TMJ Pain In Utah

If you’re struggling with jaw pain, clicking, or facial tightness—it’s very tempting to assume it’s no big deal and that it will eventually resolve itself. You might shrug it off as “just grinding your teeth” at night, blame it on a stressful week, or think that a popping jaw is just something “everyone” deals with when they eat or yawn…

There wasn’t one specific injury that caused it—but the discomfort just doesn’t seem to be shifting!

If that’s what you’re going through, you are definitely not alone—and we hear these concerns from our patients every day.

In fact, TMJ and Jaw Dysfunction are among the most common issues we address at our physical therapy clinics in Lehi and St George, UT.

What Is TMJ Pain ?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull and allows you to chew, speak, and move your jaw smoothly. TMJ pain occurs when this joint or the surrounding muscles are not functioning properly.

At Align Therapy, we see TMJ issues frequently, especially in our St. George clinic.

TMJ pain can develop for many reasons. It may be caused by muscle tension, stress, posture related strain, joint dysfunction, dental work, or issues with bite alignment. Because there are multiple potential contributors, TMJ is rarely a simple problem with a single solution. Effective treatment begins with identifying what is actually driving the pain.

What Are The Symptons Of tMJ Pain ?

TMJ symptoms often extend beyond the jaw itself and can significantly impact daily life.

Common symptoms include:

Many people with TMJ also experience frequent headaches and neck tension. Over time, this discomfort can cause individuals to withdraw from social situations, avoid long conversations, or limit time with friends and family. Something as simple as talking with a loved one can become frustrating when jaw pain is present.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating TMJ Pain ?

At Align Therapy, we focus on identifying and treating the underlying cause of TMJ pain rather than just managing symptoms. Because TMJ is often multifaceted, our care addresses the whole person, not just the jaw.

Our approach may include:

Posture plays a major role in TMJ symptoms. Forward head position and upper body tension can increase stress on the jaw joint. By addressing posture along with local jaw treatment, we often see better and longer-lasting results.

We also work closely with dentists and oral surgeons when bite or occlusion issues are contributing to symptoms. This collaborative approach allows us to address TMJ from multiple angles and create a more complete plan of care.
